The Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology (IASG) Midterm Conference 2025, was recently held at the Kakarla Subba Rao Learning Centre Auditorium, KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad. The conference on colorectal surgery, bringing together some of India’s top experts. The theme for the two-day conference was “Colorectal Diseases: Advances & Controversies,” with focus on recent developments in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), surgical innovations and cutting-edge technology in gastrointestinal surgery. The scientific program featured highly interactive sessions, symposia and multidisciplinary team discussions (MDTs), engaging specialists from across the medical fraternity. Topics ranged from benign colorectal disorders to complex oncological challenges, with a strong focus on sphincter-preserving techniques, extended lymphadenectomy, genetic screening and robotic-assisted surgeries.
Some of the key highlights of the events were expert-led sessions by eminent faculty members, including Dr. Rajesh Bhojwani (SDM Hospital, Jaipur), Dr. Rohan P Reddy (KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospitals), Dr. Bhaskar Kante (KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad), Dr. Mohan Narsimhan (MMHRC, Madurai), and Dr. Gayatri Senapathy (KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospitals). They provided in-depth insights into the evaluation, medical and surgical management of colorectal diseases. The event also has multidisciplinary case discussions across panels featuring surgical gastroenterologists, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists who analysed complex colon and rectal cancer cases, promoting a holistic, patient-centered approach.
A special hands-on training & advanced techniques session covered total proctocolectomy + IPAA, robotic pelvic surgery, laparoscopic splenic flexure mobilisation, and rectal prolapse management, offering attendees a glimpse into the future of minimally-invasive and robotic-assisted procedures. Furthermore, sessions of technological innovations in GI surgery showcased the latest breakthroughs in gastrointestinal surgery, including AI-driven applications, ICG technology and the expanding role of robotic-assisted surgery in enhancing patient outcomes.
The conference also provided a platform for discussions on ethical considerations in colorectal surgery, emerging treatment strategies and groundbreaking clinical trials in colorectal cancer. With participation from notable doctors and members from leading institutions such as AIIMS, NIMS, Apollo Hospitals, Yashoda Hospitals, and AIG Hospitals, the event reaffirmed our commitment to academic excellence and surgical innovation in surgical gastroenterology.
