Restless leg syndrome (RLS), also called Willis-Ekbom disease is a condition where a person feels compelled to move their legs a lot, especially when they are at rest. It is mostly caused by a weird or uncomfortable feeling in the feet. It can affect anyone, though we don’t know why it happens. It is also a chronic condition that only gets worse with advancing age. The sensation in the feet is normally felt more acutely when you sit at one spot for very long- like while watching a movie, travelling in a flight or having to deal with long car rides. Some common hacks include- moving through the day- like taking short walks, getting some exercise regularly, eating nutritious foods that contain iron and vitamin C and indulging in warm foot baths with salts or oils. These can help calm the feet down. Iron supplements may be taken too. In extreme cases, medications like gabapentin and pregabalin (used as anti-seizure medications) may be prescribed. Dopamine agonists or molecules that simulate the properties of dopamine may also be used in a few cases.
