13 Hour Hybrid Aortic Surgery Saves 58 Year Old Man’s Life at KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospitals

A 58 year old man suffering from a rare and life-threatening Type B aortic dissection was saved through a highly complex 13 hour hybrid surgery conducted by the cardiac team.

The patient, who had hypertension and diabetes, arrived in critical condition with multiple life-threatening complications including a partially thrombosed dissection, multiple aneurysms and total blockage of a major intestinal artery. He had previously been declared inoperable due to the condition’s complexity.

Led by Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, Head of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Senior Interventional Cardiologist & the expert team adopted a pioneering approach that combined minimally invasive endovascular techniques with open surgical precision. The first stage involved placing a 32×164 Relay Pro endovascular stent graft, followed by an intricate “Elephant Trunk Surgery” to repair the ascending aorta and restore blood flow to three major arteries.

This extraordinary success is a testament to the clinical excellence, teamwork and innovative spirit at KIMS-SUNSHINE Heart Institute which is part of KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospitals.
